It has been revealed that some of the songs Marnie and Desi performed on Girls were Kelly Clarkson rejects written by Jack Antonoff.

In a new video for Variety, actors Allison Williams and Ebon Moss-Bachrach – who portrayed the roles of Marnie and Desi in the 2012 hit HBO series Girls – reunited after working together seven years ago. In the chat, they opened up about their characters and experience being a part of the series.
Desi’s character appeared in season three of the show. He had both a romantic and musical relationship with Marnie and over the remaining three seasons, before their musical dreams and marriage deteriorate and eventually fall apart.
Speaking about the songs they performed in the series, Moss-Bachrach revealed: “I found out the other day that most of our songs were discards from Kelly Clarkson,” with Williams correcting him, adding: “I think some of them were. I think the song ‘Breathless’ was written by Jack Antonoff for Kelly Clarkson.”
“I like that song,” Moss-Bacharach said with Williams adding, “It’s a great song, she should’ve done it! But we got it, as a result.”
At the time of the show airing, Antonoff was in a relationship with the series creator, Lena Dunham, who also portrayed the character of Hannah Horvath.
Towards the end of the chat, the two were asked if they had seen any of the Marnie and Desi ‘The Tortured Poets Department’ memes in which fans call them the original tortured poets, referencing Taylor Swift‘s most recent album.
“Have I ever. I’m an insane Swiftie. I’m so honoured. I love the idea of Marnie and Desi being in ‘The Tortured Poets Department’, where someone who won’t be named is dashing out with their typewriter.” Williams said, and then went on to explain the album’s lore to Moss-Bachrach.
Girls ran from 2012 until 2017 and won various awards including a Golden Globe for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy.
In other news, Moss-Bacharach is set to return to season three of the 10 time Emmy award winning series The Bear which will be released on June 27.
