Released as the follow-up to 1992’s breakthrough debut album ‘Lazer Guided Melodies’, ‘Pure Phase’ was recorded in Bath and shared in March 1995. It went on to become a classic in the band’s discography.

It was also included by NME in the list of ‘30 Glorious Britpop Albums That Deserve a Reissue Pronto’ back in 2014, and named as one of the ‘30 Albums That Made 1995 a Vintage Year for Music’ by NME the following year.

“I think it’s quite extraordinary and I’d probably say it’s my favourite of the records I’ve made. The construction of it satisfied something in me that likes breaking the rules, not in any kind of grandiose way but there’s something in the process of that which really satisfies me,” J. Spaceman said of the upcoming anniversary tour.

“Each side of the stereo contains a completely separate mix. I checked the masters back and it still sounds like this extraordinary thing. It exists in its own space, it doesn’t sound like anybody else.”

This isn’t the first time that Spiritualized have resisted their earlier releases in recent times. Back in April, the band announced a new reissue of their country-influenced 2008 studio album ‘Songs In A&E’, with striking new artwork.

At the time, it was the latest re-release from the band, as part of the series The Spaceman Reissue Program: Curated by J. Spaceman, following on from ‘Lazer Guided Melodies’, ‘Pure Phase’, ‘Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space’ and ‘Let It Come Down’, all released in 2021. 2004’s ‘Amazing Grace’ received the re-release treatment earlier this year too.

The group’s most recent album of new material was ‘Everything Was Beautiful’ in 2022, their ninth studio record. In a four-star review, NME wrote: “Etched from a series of early demos in 2014, Pierce’s latest symphonic offering finds the Spiritualized frontman experimenting with 16 different instruments alongside 30 musicians, including his daughter Poppy, long-time collaborator John Coxon, string, brass sections and choirs. The result is a densely orchestrated record that is as solid as it is sprawling.”
