The first two episodes of Star Wars: The Acolyte dropped on Disney Plus on Tuesday, June 4, and they are already causing much speculation about the identity of Mae’s master.

Set about a hundred years before the Star Wars prequel films, The Acolyte is a thriller series. Following the murder of Jedi Master Indara (Carrie-Anne Moss), former Padawan Osha (Amandla Stenberg) initially emerges as the person responsible. However, it later becomes clear that her identical twin sister Mae is the one who killed Indara. Like Osha, Mae is a Force user, though she follows a much darker path. Toward the end of episode 1, the audience is briefly introduced to Mae’s mysterious master, whom the closed caption identifies simply as “stranger.”

Here is what we have discovered about who Mae’s master is in Star Wars: The Acolyte.

Who is Mae’s master in The Acolyte?

As of episode 2, we only know that Mae’s master is a masked individual who uses a lightsaber. In a voiceover toward the end of episode 1, this individual explains what an Acolyte is and reveals their own hostile sentiments toward the Jedi Order in the process. They assert that the Jedi live in a dream before declaring an Acolyte kills the dream.

The title card of Star Wars: The Acolyte designates Mae’s group as “a powerful few” who have learned to use “the Force in secret” “in the dark corners of the galaxy.” Their actions and the animosity they hold toward the Jedi indicate that they might be the users of the dark side of the Force. Here is the list of characters who can potentially be Mae’s master.

Darth Plagueis

Darth Plagueis was a male Muun Sith Lord and the master of Darth Sidious. While he was active during the timeline of The Acolyte, he is probably not Mae’s master. If he has already become a Sith Lord, the last thing he will do is risk exposure by killing members of the Jedi Order.

Darth Sidious

Darth Sidious or Sheev Palpatine is another potential candidate for being Mae’s master. However, we can safely rule him out as the future emperor of the galaxy was born in 84 BBY, per canon, several years after the events of The Acolyte.

Darth Tenebrous

Darth Tenebrous, Plagueis’ master is another possibility, though he can likely be ruled out for the same reasons as his pupil.

An original Character

Mae’s master can also be an original character. The Acolyte has already introduced several characters into canon in the first two episodes, and it’s very possible that this individual is one of them.
