NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Saturday is International Opioid Awareness Day and the New Mexico Department of Health is reminding the public about the epidemic in the state. According to an annual health department survey, three out of five New Mexicans know someone who is suffering from opioid abuse.
“For many New Mexicans, this issue reaches close to home. International Overdose Awareness Day is a time to renew our commitment to preventing these tragic deaths. We can all help prevent fatal overdose by knowing the signs and how to respond quickly,” said Chief Medical Officer Dr. Miranda Durham, New Mexico Department of Health in a press release.
The department says Naloxone, which blocks opioid receptors in the brain, is the first course of action if someone is overdosing. Naxolone can be obtained for free in person at NMHealth Public Health Offices and community health programs or ordered online at this link. New Mexico was the first state in the nation to require law enforcement officers to carry the life-saving drug.
