The new Labour government gets its first chance to set a legislative agenda with the king’s speech at the state opening of parliament. Jessica Elgot examines how radical it will be

For King Charles III it will be a moment steeped in tradition and ceremony. He’ll arrive at the Houses of Parliament from his gilded horse-drawn carriage, don his crown and sit on the throne. From there he will read out the speech prepared for him by his new government listing all of the legislation it intends to pass.

As deputy political editor Jessica Elgot tells Hannah Moore, it will be a milestone for Keir Starmer’s administration and a statement of intent for a government determined to “move fast and fix things” after 14 years of Conservative rule.
