The Last of Us season 2 has officially wrapped shooting

Production on the second season of HBO’s The Last of Us has wrapped, after several months of shooting.

The Last of Us cast and crew have been shooting the second season of the HBO show throughout 2024, moving across various locations in Canada. Now, the editor of the show Timothy Good has officially confirmed that the show has finished production – meaning his and the rest of the post-production team’s work has only just begun.

Wrapped! Congratulations to the incredible production crew of #TheLastOfUs season 2. We will bring your hard work home now! #editing #postproduction #TLOU @HBO @StreamOnMax pic.twitter.com/3wZZaBnapE

Good’s photos in his X post showcased a wrap party held to celebrate the close of shooting on the second season of the show, complete with an LED-lit DJ.

When will The Last of Us season 2 be released?

While we know that The Last of Us season 2 has finished production, there’s no word yet on a specific release date. HBO has confirmed that it will be coming out in 2025 but nothing further than that. Judging from typical production patterns, a release in the first half of 2025 seems possible.

A full trailer for season 2 has already been released, as well as a teaser trailer, bringing us back to Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie. It also introduces us to new characters, including Catherine O’Hara in an unknown role and Jeffrey Wright as Isaac (who he voiced in the video game).

The trailer for The Last of Us season 2 highlights that the second season will follow the fallout from Joel’s decision to save Ellie at the end of season 1, potentially dooming the rest of humanity by taking away hopes for the cure. The voiceover shows Joel and his brother Tommy (played by Gabriel Luna in the HBO show) debating Joel’s choice, with Tommy asking him what he has done.

In suitably dramatic Joel style, he replies with only: “I saved her.”

It’s been speculated that the second season of The Last of Us will split the plot of the second game in half. Those who’ve played the game can perhaps guess what inciting event would make a good season finale, although we won’t say more here to avoid spoilers…
