The Police Legend Andy Summers Announces 'An Evening With' Australian Tour

Andy Summers, the guitarist of the iconic British rock band The Police, is coming to Australia this September for a series of An Evening With tour dates.

While he toured Australia with the Andy Summers Trio back in 2001, this tour has been described as a more intimate affair. The guitarist will perform The Police classics, share stories from the stage, and showcase his acclaimed photography.

The unique music and multimedia tour begins on Tuesday, 24 September, at the Melbourne Recital Centre before heading to Brisbane’s The Tivoli on Wednesday, 25 September, the Sydney City Recital Hall on Thursday, 26 September, and ends at Adelaide’s Hindley Street Music Hall on Friday, 27 September.

General tickets for the short-but-sweet tour go on sale at 9 am on Monday, 17 June, but if you can’t wait until then, you can access pre-sale tickets today from 11 am via the Liberty Stage website. General tickets will be sold via Andy Summers’ website and Ticketmaster.

Recognised for his playing on songs like Message In A Bottle, Can’t Stand Losing You, and the Grammy-winning Every Breath You Take, Summers’ guitar-playing abilities and melodic sensibilities have soundtracked the lives of generations.

Summers isn’t the only member of The Police who’s been keen on visiting Australia; Sting toured down under last February.

While Sting is undoubtedly a star, Rolling Stone rightfully recognised Summers as one of the greatest guitarists of all time, with writer Douglas Wolk declaring: “The Police were a new kind of power trio, and Andy Summers was the main reason.

“Quickly moving away from punk, he recast jazz chords and reggae rhythms as headlong rock & roll. Summers played as sparely as possible, constructing clipped twitches or dubby washes of sound, leaving ample room for Sting and Stewart Copeland.”
