The second oldest man in Europe is Romanian. He recently turned 111 years old and lives in Vâlcea, the county with the longest life expectancy in our country, according to the National Institute of Statistics.

Many residents are nearing a century in age, reflecting the area’s suitability for a long and peaceful life. For Ion Ciocan, who was born 111 years ago, simple pleasures like a garden full of flowers and a bowl of strawberries bring happiness.

He has two nieces who always help him. 10% of the inhabitants of the commune of Galicea are over 80 years old. In fact, the entire county of Vâlcea is in the top of life expectancy in our country.
Mirela Ciocan, one of his granddaughter told ProTV: “A neighbor lived 102 years. Below, on the other side, a neighbor died last year for 100 years without two days, further down the valley, a neighbor died for 103 years!”.
“A frugal life, without excesses and don’t take it to heart. And to say like this: “God, give me strength to accept what I don’t like, that is, what I cannot change,” added Camelia Ciocan, the other granddaughter.

The longevity of Vălcea’s population is influenced by its green hills, thermal waters, mild climate, and clean air. However, lifestyle plays the most significant role.

“A common factor among these elderly individuals is their constant movement. They engage in gardening, walk frequently, and have daily activities that keep them active and healthy,” Romulus Oprică, a sociologist, explained.

Romania’s life expectancy at birth is 76.6 years, placing it third from the bottom in Europe. In contrast, Spaniards, who top the ranking, live an average of 84 years.
