The art-rock trio teased an announcement yesterday (September 30) with a short video reel and some coordinates, and today (October 1) their record label XL Recordings announced ‘Through The Glass’, which it described as an “electronic art installation for ‘Cutouts’”. The label mentioned the same coordinates, too, which identify the locations where the installations will appear at.

The installations will be at 17 Bell Street in London from today until Saturday (October 5), and you’ll be able to see them from 11am until 5pm. You’ll be able to see them at 47 Canal Street in New York until Thursday (October 3) from 7pm to 10pm, too.

‘Cutouts’ is set for release on Friday (October 4) and will be The Smile’s second album of 2024, following January’s ‘Wall Of Eyes’. The band, which comprises Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood alongside Tom Skinner, formerly of Sons of Kemet, announced ‘Cutouts’ at the end of August and shared a couple of songs from the album. They’d previously been teasing a new album to follow ‘Wall Of Eyes’ through a series of cryptic social media posts.

In a four-star review, NME called the album “a masterclass in pushing rock forward” and said: “Where previously the comparisons to their Radiohead catalogue could warp expectations, the breadth of the material on offer here suggest that it could, eventually, flip that dynamic right on its head.”

The Smile have been busy touring the album this year, but had to cancel more European tour dates in August following Greenwood falling ill and needing time to recover after a stay in intensive care. Yorke, meanwhile, is heading out on tour around Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Japan later this month and through to November.
