Tour de France: Jasper Philipsen sprints to third stage win after Girmay crash

Belgian benefits from lead-out by Mathieu van der PoelCalmer day for peloton before more mountain stages

Jasper Philipsen won stage 16 of the Tour de France, from Gruissan to Nimes, his third success in this year’s race. The Belgian sprinter again benefited from his Alpecin Deceuninck teammate, the world road race champion, Mathieu van der Poel.

As Philipsen celebrated, his fellow sprinter Biniam Girmay, the leader of the points classification, was climbing gingerly to his feet after crashing with a kilometre and a half still to race. The Eritrean, riding for Intermarche Wanty, has won three stages and was clearly in some pain as he crossed the finish line, battered and bloodied.
