Per The Hollywood Reporter, Twisters is currently tracking to make approximately $55 million in North America during its opening weekend, according to The National Research Group. Universal, who is distributing the movie in the United States, is predicting a $40-$45 million opening weekend, while The Quorom believes it could do between $54-$61 million.

Twister, in comparison, made approximately $41.1 million during its opening weekend. It went on to make $495,700,000 at the global box office, making it the second highest-grossing film of 1996 behind Independence Day.

“Daisy Edgar-Jones stars as Kate Carter, a former storm chaser haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado during her college years who now studies storm patterns on screens safely in New York City,” the synopsis for Twisters reads. “She is lured back to the open plains by her friend, Javi (Anthony Ramos) to test a groundbreaking new tracking system. There, she crosses paths with Tyler Owens (Glen Powell), the charming and reckless social-media superstar who thrives on posting his storm-chasing adventures with his raucous crew, the more dangerous the better. As storm season intensifies, terrifying phenomena never seen before are unleashed, and Kate, Tyler, Javi and their crews find themselves squarely in the paths of multiple storm systems converging over central Oklahoma in the fight of their lives.”

Twisters also stars Brandon Perea, Maura Tierney, Sasha Lane, Harry Hadden-Paton, David Corenswet, Daryl McCormack, Tunde Adebimpe, Katy O’Brian, Nik Dodani, Kiernan Shipka, and Paul Scheer.

The film is directed by Lee Isaac Chung, while the script was written by Mark L. Smith from a story by Joseph Kosinski.
