UEFA Fines Romania €40,000 for Racism, Discrimination at EURO 2024

UEFA sanctioned Romania with a fine of 40,000 euros, for the racist and discriminatory incidents that took place at some matches from EURO 2024 in Germany.

The football federations from Albania, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia and Hungary were also penalized with fines between 20,000 and 50,000 euros.

According to a statement from UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Committee, the sanctions include fines and bans on the sale of tickets to visiting fans for future official matches at UEFA level.

However, the ban on selling tickets is suspended for a two-year probationary period, applying only if another similar violation is committed during that time.

The Romanian Football Federation (FRF) must pay 40,000 euros for the discriminatory behavior of its supporters in Romania’s matches with Ukraine, Belgium and the Netherlands.

The harshest fine was imposed on Croatia, with 50,000 euros, for the incidents committed by its fans in its national team’s matches with Spain, Albania and Italy. The federations of Slovenia, Hungary, Serbia and Albania are each ordered to pay €30,000 for various incidents in several of their matches, while Austria has to pay €20,000 for a banner with a far-right message displayed by its fans in the match against Poland.

UEFA thus aims to combat racism and discrimination in European football, ensuring that stadiums are safe and respectful places for all fans. All the fines received by the Federations at EURO 2024 were caused by the behavior of the fans, DigiSport reports.
