United picks up chaotic win in San Antonio

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – New Mexico United looked to end its road struggles on Saturday night in San Antonio. It wasn’t the cleaning game by any means, however the black and yellow still found a way to come out with a 3-2 win.

Prior to the match, United stressed the emphasis on starting fast. New Mexico did just that, as a cross from Avionne Flanagan in the second minute deflected off a SAFC defender for an own goal and a 1-0 United lead.

Late in the first half, New Mexico suffered five-minute detrimental stretch. SAFC scored twice in the span of two minutes, then, three minutes later, Mukwelle Akale picked up his second yellow card of the match, resulting in a red.

Even with United down a man, New Mexico kept the pressure on. A corner from Zico Bailey connected with an Abdi Mohamed header and resulted in the equalizing goal in the 44th minute.

Five minutes into the second half, United drew a penalty in the box and Greg Hurst stepped to the spot. He scored the PK to give United a 3-2 lead. That was the final score of the game.

During the match, New Mexico goalkeeper Alex Tambakis also recorded his record-breaking 574th save. He is now the all-time leader in saves in USL-C history.

United now returns home for a match against Orange County on Wednesday. That match will kickoff at Isotopes Park at 7 p.m.
