UNM Hospital promises medical upgrades with new ‘Critical Care Tower’

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – New Mexico’s largest hospital and the only hospital in the state with a level-one trauma center has been under construction for over a year. This week on the New Mexico News Podcast, Chris and Gabby discuss the changes the new ‘Critical Care Tower’ promises to bring to UNMH, and how upgrades are aimed to transform medical care for thousands of patients.

This week’s podcast guests:

Doctor Steve McLaughlin, UNMH Chief Medical Officer

Makenzie McNeill, Communications Manager of Campus Development for UNMH

“We’ve designed it with patient spaces and staff spaces being separate,” said Dr. McLaughlin. In the current hospital setup, that traffic is mixed. Dr. McLaughlin explains why the newer design aims to create a more positive hospital experience for patients and their families.

How will the new space serve patients and staff? When will the Critical Care Tower be up and running? KRQE News 13 recently covered a tower of the new facility. You can read and watch the story at this link here.

According to UNMH, the new Critical Care Tower will include:

New adult emergency department.

18 modern operating suites with integration of interventional platform (catheterization lab and interventional radiology) with 73 perioperative bays.

96 new ICU beds.

A new parking structure with 1,400 spaces.

Sky Campus for staff and providers, with learner, wellness, and education spaces.

Chapel, Café, spacious common areas, and an abundance of natural light to supplement healing.

Room for future expansion of “96 acuity adaptable rooms” on floors 7 and 8, to open at a future date.
