UNM to honor fallen players in alumni game as Enchantment prepares for TBT

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The Enchantment is running it back in 2024 for The Basketball Tournament (TBT) and its first-round destination has been revealed. On Wednesday it was announced that The Enchantment is heading to the Houston regional to play Boise State alumni, Once a Bronco.

Before the team leaving for Texas, The Enchantment will play in a “tune-up” game in the Pit for a special night. The team will honor former Lobo basketball players who died this year including Ruben Douglas, Drew Gordon, and Greg Brown during a scrimmage against UNM alumni throughout the decades.

During the event on July 16, The Enchantment will play as “Team Gordon” and the other UNM alumni will play as “Team Douglas.” There will also be a Greg Brown three-point shooting contest.

“Being able to be associated with those guys that have done tremendous things for the University of New Mexico, it’s a great opportunity,” said Enchantment coach and UNM alum Kenny Thomas. “I’ve watched them play obviously and been around them over the years since I’ve been done. Being able to come back and do this for them and support them is huge. We’re trying to get as many ex-alumni players as we can to come through and support.”

Word spread through the Lobo basketball alumni network and plenty on players are eager to come back to Albuquerque for the event. Some of the players already announced include Tony Snell, Alex Kirk, Darrington Hobson, Jamal Fenton, Phillip McDonald, and Amaya Brown, Greg Brown’s daughter.

“Any chance that the guys can come back and play in the Pit in front of the fans and be a part of something with their brothers, I think they look forward to doing that,” said organizer Brandon Mason.

Tickets for the event are currently available on the UNM athletic website.
