Unseasonably warm weather continues

Record and near-record heat moves into parts of New Mexico through Friday. Warm weather will continue though into early October.

A cold front moved across New Mexico last night, but isn’t having a big impact on temperatures today. In fact, the only part of the state that’s seeing cooler temperatures are southeast New Mexico. For the rest of the state, temperatures today are a degree or two warmer compared to yesterday. It’s also another sunny and dry day all across New Mexico. With the dry air in place, temperatures will cool off quickly once again tonight, with a cool start to the day Thursday. High pressure starts moving over the state Thursday afternoon, and this could bring record and near-record high temperatures across central and northwest New Mexico.

Another backdoor front moves into eastern New Mexico Friday. Once again, it will only bring a very slight cool down to the eastern part of the state, but it will also bring in isolated storm chances to the northern mountains and down to the East Mountains. Most of the rain will likely evaporate before reaching the ground though. Near-record heat is likely in Albuquerque Friday afternoon before the front brings in a gusty east canyon wind, up to 30 mph.

Temperatures will be slightly cooler across the state this weekend, but still well above normal for the end of September. An isolated shower or two will again be possible across just the mountains, from the northern mountains to the Sacramentos. Another weak cold front moves in next Monday that will bring a slight drop in temperatures again by next Tuesday, but the above average warmth continues into October.
