A record setting hot end to the week across parts of New Mexico. This warm and mostly dry weather continues through early October.
It has been an unseasonably hot afternoon across most of New Mexico with high temperatures breaking or nearing records. Albuquerque climbed to 92° today, not only breaking a record high, but also marking the hottest temperatures ever recorded this late in the year. Santa Fe, Farmington, and Gallup have also broken record high temperatures today. Spotty showers and storms have developed today though over the northern mountains, including Santa Fe and Las Vegas. These showers will end later tonight. A backdoor front will spill into the Rio Grande Valley later tonight as well, bringing a gusty east wind up to 40 mph. This wind will die down by Saturday morning.
Despite the backdoor front today, it will only leave temperatures a couple degrees cooler Saturday and Sunday afternoon, with high temperatures still well above normal for the end of September. A couple spotty showers and storms will again be possible in northern New Mexico Saturday afternoon, but Sunday will be drier.
Another round of record heat is likely Monday afternoon, especially in Albuquerque and western parts of New Mexico. Highs will climb back into the 90s Monday afternoon in the Metro. Another cold front moves in by early Tuesday morning, which will cool off highs just slightly again Tuesday. However, this is short lived with another warmup starting Wednesday, that will keep near-record heat around into the end of next week.
If you were hoping for more fall-like weather heading into Balloon Fiesta, unfortunately it is going to stay very warm for the first weekend, with low temperatures in the low 50s and highs in the mid 80s.
