Video Premiere: Farmer Tap Dave Matthews on “Honey”

Seattle-based Farmer have unveiled a new music video for their track “Honey.” The song originated from multi-instrumentalist Geoff Stanfield and singer Jeff Taylor’s shared pandemic-era project and was released on their debut album, The Color That Suits You, which dropped on March 29, 2024. Today’s video premiere finds the two Pacific Northwest artists alongside featured guest and fellow regional resident Dave Matthews.

Stepping outside the comforts of his jazz-informed style, a mix of world music references tinged with roots rock and jamband tendencies, Matthews naturally leans into Farmer’s indie dispense–some familiar territory for the shape-shifting artist. Reflecting on their convergence of talent, Stanfield references Matthew’s role in the video location and visual aspects of their debut, “Dave and I have a mutual friend that is a boat builder here in Seattle, and when we were discussing different locations to film, his massive waterfront warehouse full of boats in various stages of completion seemed like the perfect spot.”

For Farmer, Taylor excels as vocal lead, complimenting his own range with the sonic ambiance of Matthews’ harmony; meanwhile, Stanfield takes his experience with Black Lab, Sun Kil Moon and Dick Dale to inform his instrumental through-line. Touching on the locationality of the shoot, Stanfield added, “Although ‘Honey’ is ultimately about solving the unsolvable puzzle, the song has many references to water and the Puget Sound, so it resonated as a good location to shoot the video. Director Duncan Sharp, and DP Christopher Bell did a great job of capturing that water vibe.”

He continued, “The epic drone footage was all filmed for this project by Duncan’s son Dominic and I’m sure the tanker captain simply loved being buzzed by an unidentified camera drone several miles offshore. As luck would have it, we got our first serious cold snap that evening and the heat was not exactly robust, so the coats were not a wardrobe choice! Ah, Seattle…”

Prior to today’s video premiere, Farmer tapped friends and collaborators Tim Lefebvre (David Bowie, Tedeschi Trucks), Mark Guiliana (David Bowie, St. Vincent), Matt Flynn (Maroon 5), Ivan Anderson, Leah Siegel and Matthews to assist with The Color That Suits You. Connecting Matthew to the project once again, Stanfield added, “Dave is just the dude. The most humble, generous, down to earth guy you’ll ever meet. I feel lucky to call him a friend. Pretty good singer too.”
