Volunteers Needed to Save Historic House in Southern Muntenia

A house with a story and significant architectural value from Remuș village, Giurgiu county, which was to be demolished to make way for a parking lot, was relocated to Măgurele commune, Ilfov county. The house is to regain its former glory with the pro bono help of people who will respond to the call for volunteers launched by Asociatia Monumente Renăscute/the Association of Reborn Monuments, the only non-profit project to save houses with cultural value in the south of Muntenia.

The house belonged to Ilie Micu, a telephone operator in the village of Remuș (formerly Vlașca) during the interwar period, who is among the first telephone operators in Romania. Despite all the efforts made by the Association to save it in situ, in its original location, the Ilie Micu house received a demolition order to make it possible to expand a village store parking lot, so the decision was made to relocate it.

“Ilie Micu was a great lover of proportions, details and beauty, transposed in his home that he built in 1932. For many, this house was a kind of Voroneț of the interwar houses in the south of Muntenia. I am extremely glad that we managed to bring it to Măgurele commune, Ilfov county, and to start the procedure of restoring and replicating the ornamentation that was destroyed”, says Florin Radu Ștefănescu, founder of the Renaissance Monuments Association.

He has already launched an invitation on social media channels to anyone who would like to voluntarily put his shoulder to the restoration of this gem of architectural and historical value.

On July 6, at 7:00 a.m., we begin to complete it. We will fill the walls with earth and straw. All those who want to participate in the revival and restoration of a pearl of Muntenia’s vernacular built heritage are warmly welcome!“, reads the message released by Monumente Renăscute.

The rescue of the house in Remus comes after another important project of the Association: the relocation and restoration of the Frusina House in 2023, on a plot of land made available by the town hall of Corbeanca. The Monumente Renăscute Association was founded three years ago, with the aim of saving valuable abandoned houses in the south of Muntenia. It is about the traditional houses that “still speak”, the outbuildings in the Romanian village and other heritage buildings on the verge of collapse.
