Warm and dry weather continues into the weekend

Near-record and record breaking high temperatures continue for parts of New Mexico. The state dries out over the weekend.

A weak backdoor cold front moved through New Mexico last night. This has resulted in high temperatures decreasing by 10 degrees or more across northeastern New Mexico. The cold front did not affect temperatures as much in central and western New Mexico. In fact, high temperatures in these regions are continuing to increase and reach record breaking levels. The temperatures are expected to increase through the weekend before cooling off early next week.

Rain chances continue to be few and far between across New Mexico today and over the weekend. There is a chance for very spotty showers in the Gila National Forest and the Northern Mountains today and over the weekend. An unseasonably strong high pressure system to the west of New Mexico paired with an upper level ridge is responsible for the lack of rain and high temperatures.

Balloon Fiesta officially kicks off early Saturday morning. Right now temperatures are looking rather comfortable for the early morning events with lows in the mid to high 50’s. Winds are currently forecasted to be around 2-7 mph on both Saturday and Sunday morning.
