Here is everything you need to know about the future of dystopian drama series.

Was The Handmaid’s Tale Canceled?

No, The Handmaid’s Tale was not canceled.

The Handmaid’s Tale will conclude with its sixth season. Showrunner Bruce Miller announced in a press release that the series will provide a fitting end to June’s tumultuous journey.

Why is The Handmaid’s Tale ending after Season 6?

The Handmaid’s Tale ending was pre-planned by the makers.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Miller shared that the ending of the series was planned since the beginning. He explained that he was contemplating The Handmaid’s Tale conclusion once he finished reading the original novel by Margaret Atwood. Further, the lead actor and returning director Elisabeth Moss provided a clear explanation of the endgame stating:

”I’m a big believer in that there’s a beginning and an end to every story. The book is about this one woman’s journey. It’s not about the whole war or the fall of Gilead. It’s about these people in this moment in time. I don’t think anything should ever go on forever. History shows that series tend to maybe not get so good, though there are exceptions.”

Miller is also developing a sequel series, The Testaments, based on Atwood’s follow-up novel. Set six years after the conclusion of The Handmaid’s Tale, The Testaments will follow the journey of Nick and June’s daughter, Nicole. This means fans can expect another compelling drama after the original series concludes.

When is The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 coming out?

The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 will go into production this year and is expecting a 2025 release.

According to People, the plot of season 6 is kept under wraps, however, Moss hinted at the complex dynamics between June and Serena in the 2024 Happy Sad Confused podcast. She also added that the final season will prove to be a complete satisfaction for the loyal viewers.

Additionally, the series will mark the return of the original cast members Moss, Yvonne Strahovski, Max Minghella, and Bradley Whitford to name a few. Apart from this, Josh Charles will be joining the cast of the show.

Hulu will stream all episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6.
