The rising indie rockers and former NME Cover stars broke into the two covers while on stage in Manchester last week – one of the recent shows they have been playing as part of their ongoing UK tour.

The dates come in celebration of their recently-shared debut album ‘This Could Be Texas’, which arrived in April and already has become one tipped to be featured in some of the best albums of 2024.

Now, while playing numerous tracks from the breakthrough LP while on stage at the Gorilla venue, Lily Fontaine and co. used the opportunity to make a nod to Manchester music royalty, The Smiths.

Towards the end of their 15-song set, the band delivered a surprise rendition of classic track by the indie pioneers ‘Big Mouth Strikes Again’. This followed on from performances of ‘The World’s Biggest Paving Slab’, ‘You Blister My Paint’ and ‘The Best Tears Of Your Life’.

From there, they broke into tracks including ‘Nearly Daffodils’, ‘R&B’ and ‘Albert Road’, before heading back for one more cover in the encore.

This was the LCD Soundsystem hit ‘New York, I Love You But You’re Bringing Me Down’ – which has no connection to Manchester unlike the Smiths track, but rather one the members seem to be a fan of.

Check out more footage of the show below, as well as the full setlist.

English Teacher’s setlist was:

‘The World’s Biggest Paving Slab’
‘I’m Not Crying, You’re Crying’
‘Broken Biscuits’
‘Not Everybody Gets to Go to Space’
‘Albatross’
‘Sideboob’
‘Mastermind Specialism’
‘You Blister My Paint’
‘This Could Be Texas’
‘The Best Tears of Your Life’
‘Bigmouth Strikes Again’ (The Smiths cover)
‘Nearly Daffodils’
‘R&B’
‘Albert Road’
‘New York, I Love You but You’re Bringing Me Down’

The show in Manchester last Friday (May 24) followed on from gigs in Glasgow, Belfast, Dublin, Leeds and others earlier this month. Following the gig, the band have gone on to play slots in Birmingham and Nottingham, as well as make an appearance at Bearded Theory festival over the weekend.

The tour dates continue tonight (May 29) with a slot at the Electric Brixton venue in London. Visit here for any remaining last minute tickets.

English Teacher’s debut album ‘This Could Be Texas’ was given a glowing five-star review by NME, and described as establishing the members as some who “dare to dream”.

“You’ve probably heard English Teacher compared to Squid and Black Country, New Road, but there’s so much colour on the palette of this record than you may have thought,” it read.

“What you have in ‘This Could Be Texas’ is everything you want from a debut; a truly original effort from start to finish, an adventure in sound and words, and a landmark statement.”
