In 2022, The Gaslight Anthem announced its intent to reunite and deliver a record to mark the end of its 2015-sparked hiatus. True to their plan, they released History Books on October 27, 2023, their first new record in nine years, and later added a four-track companion EP to exemplify their comeback further. This summer, the band has supported their latest work on the road, a move which continued last night at Boston’s MGM Music Hall at Fenway, with added help from LP contributor and New York City bassist Karina Rykman.
Despite the tour’s name serving as a reference point to their latest deliverable, Sunday night’s concert dipped into a variety of the band’s albums. In addition to History Books, The Gaslight Anthem coasted through pulls off of The ‘59 Sound, Handwritten, American Slang, Sing or Swim and Get Hurt. After tapping into their fan favorite, “Here’s Looking at You, Kid,” Rykman stepped out to assist on Billie Eilish’s original “Ocean Eyes,” which was also included on the band’s History Books LP with help from Rykman.
Rykman stuck around and helped out her hosts on follow-ups, “Mae” and “Great Expectations,” as well as “The ‘59 Sound” and evening’s final offering, a cover of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” The latter also included help from Pinkshift for a collective shred of the ’90s grunge favorite.
