Metallica have played ‘Inamorata’, their longest song to date, live for the first time – check out footage of the performance below.

‘Inamorata’ is taken from the band’s 11th studio album ‘72 Seasons’, and it runs at just over 11 minutes. Metallica are currently touring Europe in support of the album as part of the ‘M72’ tour, and gave the song its live debut on Sunday night (May 26) in Munich, Germany.
“This next song, we have never, ever played live before,” frontman James Hetfield told the crowd, as captured in fan-shot video.
“And, you know, in our band we don’t recognise the word ‘mistake’, because there are no ‘mistakes’. There’s just unique moments that happen, all right? That’s what we need to tell ourselves. This one is from ’72 Seasons’. It’s one of my favourites, so I’m gonna like it.” Watch video of the performance below.
While ‘Inamorata’ currently stands as the band’s longest song, the honour of Metallica’s longest recording goes to ‘Mercyful Fate’. A medley of covers paying tribute to the work of the titular Danish heavy metal band, its runtime of 11:11 edges out ‘Inamorata’ by a second. ‘Mercyful Fate’ is included in the band’s 1998 compilation album ‘Garage Inc’.
Metallica played two nights in Munich on this tour. Their first date in the city, on Friday, included a serendipitous (and totally metal) moment: A thunderstorm happened during the concert, and as the band ripped into ‘Master of Puppets’, lightning flashed in the sky above the band.
As with all destinations on the ‘M72’ tour, Metallica scheduled two days of concerts with different setlists and opening acts – on Friday, they were supported by Architects and Mammoth WVH, the current band of Wolfgang Van Halen. On Sunday, the band were joined by Five Finger Death Punch and Ice Nine Kills.
Alongside setlist staples like ‘Creeping Death’, ‘One’ and ‘Enter Sandman’, the band performed three ‘72 Seasons’ tracks: ‘Inamorata’, ‘If Darkness Had a Son’, and the title track.
Bassist Robert Trujillo previously spoke about the band’s decision to adjust their setlist midway into the tour.
“Initially, we thought it would be really clever and exciting to open the show with an instrumental, like ‘The Call Of Ktulu’ or ‘Orion’,” Trujillo told Classic Rock. “We found that an instrumental is very powerful for the set but it sits much better in the middle of a set, it’s a chance for the fan to absorb and embrace the song. Rather than just coming out throwing a curveball at them, we would rather come out with a ‘Whiplash’ or a ‘Creeping Death’, something that kind of smacks you in the face.”
As for the album ’72 Seasons’ itself, NME’s Kevin EG Perry called it “a ragged beast that explodes out of the traps and never lets up” in a four-star review.
