On Sunday, Sept. 22, My Morning Jacket returned home to Louisville, Ky. for a highly-anticipated headline set at Bourbon & Beyond 2024. With this high-profile appearance right in its Bluegrass State stomping grounds, the rock titans brought their performance above and beyond by welcoming Lucius vocalists Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig for a soft and sweet treatment of Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon”

MMJ kicked off its festival set with “One Big Holiday.” After cycling through six more live staples, including “Off the Record,” “Touch Me I’m Going to Scream Pt. 1,” “Mahgeetah” and “Spring (Among the Living),” the band took a beat so frontman Jim James could introduce Wolfe and Laessig. The duo, who performed earlier in the day’s program between stops on the long-awaited Zen Diagram Tour (The War on Drugs and The National also took the stage at Bourbon & Beyond) joined James and My Morning Jacket by contributing the gentle backing chorus originally recorded by Linda Ronstadt.

The cover was completed by Jesse Wells and Rodney Elkins of Tyler Childers’ The Food Stamps backing band. While Wells added a soaring fiddle section, drummer Elkins stood at center stage with a broom, mirroring the subtle sweeping sounds from Young’s original studio treatment. Sunday’s performance followed a history of collaboration between Lucius and My Morning Jacket, who memorably teamed up for Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall Pt. 2” at One Big Holiday 2017. My Morning Jacket will return to the stage tomorrow, Sept. 24, for a performance at Empower FCU Amphitheater at Lakeview in Syracuse, N.Y. The band’s co-headline tour with Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats will continue for three further stops through Sept. 28, then MMJ will perform pairs of shows with S.G. Goodman (Sept 30 and Oct. 1) and Jade Bird (Oct. 3 and 4) to close out its fall tour. For tickets and more information, visit mymorningjacket.com/tour.
