Wawa named No. 1 convenience store in consumer satisfaction survey

(WPHL) – A new ranking of America’s convenience stores has recently confirmed what residents of Philadelphia have likely believed for years.

As part of its 2024 Convenience Store Study, the analysts at the American Consumer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) have determined that Wawa, a chain of convenience stores headquartered just outside of Philly, is the top-rated convenience store chain in terms of customer satisfaction.

In second place is Oklahoma-based chain QuikTrip, with 81 points, followed by Texas-based Buc-ee’s and Arkansas-headquartered Murphy USA tied for third, with 80 points each. Casey’s, based in Iowa, and Sheetz, another Pennsylvania-headquartered chain, finished not far behind with a satisfaction scores of 79 each.

The ASCI noted that many of the top-ranked chains specialized in ready-to-eat foods prepared in the stores’ kitchens.

“Convenience stores are no longer just a quick stop for gas and snacks — they are becoming serious competitors in the food service industry,” Forrest Morgeson, the ACSI’s director of research and an Associate Professor of Marketing at Michigan State University, said in a statement included with an ACSI press release.

“The top-performing convenience store brands are now on par with fast food chains in terms of food quality and variety, offering customers a wide range of fresh, gourmet options,” Morgeson added.

Aside from the food offerings at the top-ranked chains, factors that contributed to the overall satisfaction scores included hours, location, and the convenience and reliability of each store’s apps or mobile-ordering platforms, the ACSI said.

The ACSI Convenience Store Study 2024 is based on 5,710 completed surveys. Customers were chosen at random and contacted via email between March and September 2024.
