‘We’re not all Labour, but everyone was jubilant’: UK voters on the election result

After 14 years of Conservative rule, the UK has woken to the news of a Labour landslide election victory. Keir Starmer is expected to officially become prime minister later on Friday after Rishi Sunak conceded following a historic defeat for his party.

While the map of the UK appeared awash with red on Friday morning, the Liberal Democrats also made huge gains, with more than 70 seats, while the Greens, Plaid Cymru and Reform UK had all won four seats each so far. The first-past-the-post system meant that despite Nigel Farage’s party winning more votes than the Liberal Democrats, it secured just a fraction of the seats.
