Celine Dion, a victim of stiff person syndrome, was born on March 30, 1968, in Charlemagne, Quebec, Canada. There, she grew up with her family. Dion’s music career began at a young age when she wrote her first song at 12. As the years passed, she became an icon in the industry. Dion’s hits include tracks she released across her decades-long music journey. Titanic’s “My Heart Will Go On” from Titanic has become a fan favorite. However, she has faced her own set of challenges and struggles in life.

Amazon Prime Video’s documentary I Am: Celine Dion will chronicle her life as she battles stiff person syndrome. Reportedly, Dion was diagnosed with an incurable condition in 2022 that causes muscle stiffness, painful spasms, and double vision. The disorder also limits her mobility, making it difficult for her to walk and the use of her vocal cords. With the use of archival and behind-the-scenes footage, the singer recalls her struggle after the diagnosis.

The much-awaited Celine Dion documentary premieres on Amazon Prime Video on June 25, 2024.

How old is Celine Dion now & what causes stiff person syndrome?

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke stated that scientists don’t yet know what causes stiff person syndrome. Celine Dion, who is now 56, was diagnosed with the rare disorder in 2022 and is opening up about her struggles in the upcoming documentary. Before the premiere, the singer talked about her battle with the condition in an NBC exclusive, reported The Hollywood Reporter.

Dion, ahead of the I Am: Celine Dion documentary premiere, has disclosed her years-long struggle with stiff person syndrome. She recently claimed to have felt the impact of the disorder since 2008. The singer also revealed that she had started consuming lethal amounts of prescription drugs before her diagnosis because of the muscle spasms.

The mother-of-three stated that doctors were able to reach a conclusive diagnosis after conducting tests for nearly a decade. During those years, Dion admitted that she had started relying on high doses of diazepam or Valium. This eventually increased her tolerance, and she began to take life-threatening amounts of doses. She claimed she had started taking at least 90 milligrams of diazepam every day.

Earlier this year, Prime Video dropped the I Am: Celine Dion documentary trailer, revealing an intimate account from her singer. The documentary shows Celine Dion as she learns to live with stiff person syndrome. It also depicts the singer’s resilience and courage as she battles the condition.
