This summer, The Whitney Museum is joining forces with Brooklyn-based hotspot Public Records to bring live music to their beloved Free Friday Nights program. The weekly event promises free admission to all visitors from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., complete with exclusive access to exhibitions, performances, the Whitney’s Studio Bar and more. Now, alongside its vaunted venue partner, the experience will have a sonic component, with playlists and ambient music in Frenchette Bakery at the Whitney and Studio Bar each week and live performances from Joy Guidry, Laraaji and NOMON on July 12, July 19 and Aug. 9.

On July 12 at 7:30 p.m., bassoonist and composer Joy Guidry is slated to kick off the partnership with a rich and emotive performance consisting of compositions that fuse electronic, ambient, jazzy and gospel-influenced sounds. This inaugural feature arrives just in time for West Side Fest, a cultural ode to the West Side, which kicks off the same evening. Then, the following Friday, July 19, longstanding outsider experimentalist Laraaji will grace the historic museum with an atmospheric set spanning piano, zither and mbira that is sure to reckon with the cosmos.

On Aug. 9, the final evening of the series, NOMON (Shayna and Nava Dunkelman) are set to perform. Known for their intricate arrangements and dextrous combination of avant-garde, contemporary and electronic sounds, the percussive sister act promise museumgoers an ethereal evening. Aug. 9 will also be the final Free Friday Night where fans can view the Whitney Biennial in full prior to its closing the next Sunday, Aug. 11.

As the events operate on a first-come, first-served basis, advance tickets are recommended, and can be reserved here. For more information on the Public Records collaboration, visit whitney.org/events/public-records-2024.
