The English rock band Oasis came together in 1991. The initial members of the band included Liam Gallagher, Paul Arthurs, Paul McGuigan, and Tony McCaroll. A few months later, Liam Gallagher’s brother, Noel Gallagher, also joined as a fifth member. However, around 18 years later, Oasis disbanded as Noel left the band. Now, in a surprising turn of events, the band announced their return with an upcoming tour. Let’s take a look at the details of the reason behind the Oasis breakup and why they are getting back together.

Why did Oasis break up?

The primary reason for Oasis’ breakup was the ongoing feud between brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher.

Starting as a five-member band in 1991, Oasis delivered a number of hits over the years with songs like “Wonderwall” and “Don’t Look Back in Anger.” However, on Aug. 28, 2009, the band broke up after a backstage dispute at the Rock en Seine festival in Paris. The brothers had an ongoing feud for decades before the band disbanded. Two years later, Liam also sued his brother for libel, demanding that fans know the truth behind the band’s breakup.

As per NPR, following the disbandment, Noel wrote in a statement, “People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer.” Liam then went on to continue performing with the band under the name Beady Eye, while Noel formed his own band called High Flying Birds.

Why are Liam and Noel Gallagher reforming Oasis?

Setting aside their differences, Liam and Noel Gallagher are reforming Oasis for their much-awaited return to the stage.

Oasis’ Liam and Noel Gallagher are all set to return to the stage together in 2025 after 15 years. They announced via X (formerly Twitter) that tickets to the tour will go live on Saturday, August 31, at 9 a.m. British time and 8 a.m. Irish Standard Time. They will perform a total of 14 dates in July and August 2025 across the U.K. and Ireland.

Additionally, the band’s and the brothers’ official Instagram accounts jointly posted a caption that reads, “The guns have fallen silent. The stars have aligned. The great wait is over. Come see. It will not be televised.”
