NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – The trial for a South Carolina man accused of killing a New Mexico State Police officer is being pushed back again.
Back in March, police claimed Jaremy Smith stole a car out of South Carolina that later broke down near Tucumcari.
State Police Officer Justin Hare stopped to help, and officials said Smith shot and killed him. Smith was found in Albuquerque a few days later and arrested.
Smith’s trial was originally scheduled for this week after a previous pushback, but court records show both sides have agreed to delay the trial.
Smith is facing several federal charges, including carjacking resulting in death.
If convicted, smith could face the death penalty. He’s also facing 17 charges in South Carolina related to the death of a paramedic. A date for the trial has not been set.
