In Defense of Animals group gives help to West Valley Animal Shelter

Marilyn Kroplick, president of In Defense of Animals, donated supplies worth $2,000 to the West Valley Animal Shelter on Wednesday with the help of the Tarzana Neighborhood Council. Jeffrey Mausner, a former U.S. Department of Justice prosecutor and chairman of the neighborhood council’s Animal Welfare Committee, said in a prepared statement, “This is a time for all of us to step up. Tarzana Neighborhood Council is proud to help the shelter animals of West Valley and we’re encouraging other neighborhood councils to do the same. The animals depend on us.”

Kroplick said that when the Tarzana Neighborhood Council approached her group with the idea to join an effort to deliver needed supplies to abandoned animals in the San Fernando Valley, “we immediately agreed. With shelters in crisis, we hope other (Los Angeles) neighborhood councils will follow their lead, partnering with nonprofits to support local shelters in need.”

Mason, a dog who Kroplick, Mausner and Tarzana Neighborhood Council member Sima Salek visited with at the West Valley Shelter on Wednesday, was described by a volunteer there as a “favorite.” Mason had a reputation as a friendly dog who enjoyed “playtime and walks, but was equally happy to snuggle on the couch.”

According to Mausner, Los Angeles animal shelters are at more than 175% capacity and have suffered from budget cuts.
