2 Killed, 1 arrested in wrong-way crash in Pomona during police pursuit

A wrong-way, rollover crash during a police pursuit claimed the lives of two people on the 10 Freeway in Pomona on Friday, Oct. 4.

Pomona Police Department officers were pursuing a black BMW X6 on the westbound freeway at 4:47 p.m. when the driver began going the wrong way near Kellogg Drive, lost control and crashed into a dirt berm, CHP Officer Sergio Garcia said.

The BMW rolled over several times onto the transition road from the northbound 71 Freeway to the 10 Freeway, Garcia said. The driver, identified as 30-year-old Erick Daniel Bolanos of Montclair, ran away but was quickly taken into custody by Pomona police officers.

Two passengers were ejected in the crash and were pronounced dead at the scene. A third passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries to his abdomen and was taken to Pomona Valley Hospital for treatment, police said.

The 44-year-old driver of a white Toyota C-HR was driving on the transition road when her subcompact crossover SUV was struck by debris from the BMW, but she did not sustain any injuries.

It was not immediately known what prompted the pursuit.

Anyone who witnessed or has information about the crash was asked to call CHP Officer H. Metzgar at 626-338-1164.
