78-year-old Clovis woman shot in the chest while answering front door, police say

CLOVIS, N.M. (KRQE) – A 78-year-old woman died after she was shot while she answered her front door in Clovis Wednesday night, according to the Clovis Police Department.

The victim’s 80-year-old husband called the police at 6:53 p.m. to report that his wife, Virginia Montoya, had been shot at the home on Traver Street. Montoya had a single gunshot wound to the chest and was rushed to the hospital before she passed away.

Police are investigating and are asking residents in the Traver Street area to review their home security camera systems to see if they captured anything that could help with the investigation.
