Albuquerque man sentenced for stealing 2 firearms during robbery

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – An Albuquerque man has been sentenced for an armed robbery crime. Court documents said the incident took place in April 2022.

Dawayne Yates, 53, came into a Big 5 Sporting Goods store on San Mateo and asked to see a rifle. His identity was confirmed, and a Ruger Mini-14 rifle was handed to him. Yates reportedly pulled out a handgun and requested another rifle. The employee, out of fear, gave Yates a 12-gauge shotgun.

Documents claimed Yates took both firearms and left in a vehicle with no license plate. Fingerprints at the scene were linked to Yates. He was later found at a motel. At the motel, police said they found a Taurus pistol matching the gun used in the robbery, a .22 caliber rifle, ammunition, body armor, and suspected fentanyl.

The firearms taken from the store weren’t recovered. Yates was not allowed to have firearms or ammunition because he had been convicted before.

Yates was sentenced to 66 months for armed robbery of a Federal Firearms Licensee. He will be required to serve five years of supervised release.
