Boxers hold community event to kick off fight week

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Angelo Leo is set to fight in New Mexico for the first time in nine years. The bout will be against Venado Lopez for the IBF Featherweight World Title.

“I knew eventually I would come back and fight here in Albuquerque, but I didn’t think it would be this time around, especially for a world title. So, I’m very honored and blessed for that opportunity.”

On Wednesday a meet-and-greet was held at Sanchez Brothers Boxing gym to begin fight week festivities. Undercard fighter Matthew “Diamond Boy” Griego also spoke on a last-minute change of opponent. Abraham Perez was forced to drop out this week after a life-threatening health scare.

“It’s unfortunate that things like that happen,” said Griego. “Only the man upstairs knows why. I’m glad he’s doing better. I just got to try to stay focused, maintain calm and you know look forward to fighting. So, it’s a big card for me. It’s still a big opportunity for me to show what I can do on television.”
