Bullet grazes head of 4-year-old in Zion shootout involving ‘numerous people,’ police say

A 4-year-old girl’s head was grazed by a bullet during a shootout over the weekend in Zion, police said.

The girl was treated and released from a hospital following the Saturday shooting, and a teenager was taken into custody, according to authorities.

Police said they received reports of shooting at 2:17 p.m. in the 2200 block of Galilee Avenue. Arriving officers found “numerous people in the area with varying degrees of involvement,” the department said.

The father of the wounded girl approached police, saying she had been shot. The girl was conscious and alert, police said, and her wound was later determined to be minor. She was released from the hospital later Saturday, police said.

Police said their investigation determined two groups of people fired at each other from close range and “without regard for bystanders.” Although there were no other reports of injuries, there was damage to vehicles and buildings, police said.

A 17-year-old was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm and was transported to the county juvenile facility. Other offenders are being sought in the ongoing investigation, police said.
