Cannes Film Festival 2024: Thriller “Anora” won the Palme d’Or. Romanian film grabs Queer Palm

“Three Kilometers to the End of the World”, a film directed by Emanuel Pârvu, received the Queer Palm Award at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday. The award, established in 2010, rewards diversity.

The award was handed to director Emanuel Pârvu by Lukas Dhont who also read the jury’s motivation: “A harsh and precious breakdown of a system of violence. His perspective slowly reveals the patriarchal world in which our characters grew up where the space to fully exist is made impossible by deeply rooted idea structures. […] In this mesmerizing film, people seem to be held by strings that keep them away from the light, until some of them begin to break free.” Miruna Berescu, co-writer and producer of the film, also attended the ceremony.

The 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival ended on Saturday evening with the traditional awards ceremony. The feature film “Anora”, directed by the American filmmaker Sean Baker, won the Palme d’Or trophy, the jury of the competition announced on Saturday evening, reports the official website of the event.

Marking a new wave of independent American cinema, “Anora” is a thriller that tells the sad but often funny story of a New York stripper who marries the son of a Russian oligarch on a whim, a decision that triggers a wave of problems.

“This film is magnificent, full of humanity (…) It broke our hearts,” said the president of the Cannes jury, American filmmaker Greta Gerwig. We have to make movies so they can be released in theaters,” said American director Sean Baker, who dedicated his film “to all sex workers.” I know that I will continue to fight for cinematography. We have to fight to make movies that are released in theaters. The world needs to remember that watching a movie on a mobile phone or at home is not the way movies should be watched,” added the 53-year-old American director.

In 2023, the Palme d’Or trophy was awarded to the feature film “Anatomy d’une chute”, directed by French filmmaker Justine Triet.
