Disneyland plans new Encanto musical show

Disneyland is preparing to tap into the Oscar-winning animated film “Encanto” with a new musical production starring Mirabel and her sisters singing along to the original soundtrack by “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Disney Auditions has posted roles for a new limited-run Encanto “entertainment offering” coming to Disney California Adventure.

The Disney Auditions posting seeks a Mirabel look-alike vocalist and actress as well as Isabela and Luisa look-alike characters to perform on stage.

Disneyland Resort is always exploring new ways to bring favorite stories to life, like the introduction of characters Isabela and Luisa Madrigal from Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Encanto,” according to Disneyland officials. The Disneyland Resort looks forward to sharing more details at a later date.

Disney’s 2021 “Encanto” musical comedy animated film tells the story of a Colombian family with supernatural powers. Madrigal sisters Mirabel, Isabela and Luisa live in a magical house in the charmed and hidden mountain town of Encanto.

Is the Encanto “entertainment offering” coming to DCA a Broadway-style production, smaller stage show, interactive sing-along, character meet-and-greet or something else?

The Disney Auditions posting offers a few clues that suggest an Encanto show is coming to DCA in the next few months.

The Mirabel job listing seeks a mezzo-soprano singer with musical theater experience who would be required to join the Disneyland union representing actors and singers. The Isabela and Luisa roles call for on-stage work.

All three jobs pay premium rates of $28 to $37 per hour that are above the typical entry level wages for Disneyland meet-and-greet characters.

Disneyland doesn’t need to hire a Mirabel meet-and-greet character since she’s already been making photo op appearances in Frontierland and Paradise Gardens. Bruno has appeared during Oogie Boogie Bash.

California Adventure has several empty stages that could serve as perfect venues for an Encanto musical show.

The Hyperion Theater has sat empty since the limited run of “Rogers: The Musical” ended in 2023. The last major show on the Hollywood Land backlot stage was canceled mid-run in early June during Pixar Fest.

The “Celebracion Encanto” sing-along show has been playing at Florida’s Epcot throughout the summer. Something similar could work on the stages in Hollywood Land, Paradise Gardens or along Paradise Bay.

DCA hosted a Frozen sing-along in the mid-2010s in the Sunset Showcase Theater that houses “Mickey Philharmagic” — another venue that could host an Encanto sing-along.

When will the new Encanto show begin?

A Halloween show is out of the question with auditions scheduled for mid-August — about a week before Halloween Time starts at Disneyland and DCA.

New shows can require weeks or months of rehearsals — making the Viva Navidad holiday season starting in mid-November a more likely candidate for an Encanto show.

DCA drew inspiration from Colombia for an Encanto holiday celebration during Viva Navidad in 2021 with character meet-and-greets, live music and regional food.

Disneyland ran an Encanto nighttime projection show in 2022 on the facade of It’s a Small World set to the chart-topping song “We Don’t Talk About Bruno.”
