Ethel Cain has criticised the behaviour of some fans at her live shows, saying that they shouldn’t have to “fight for their life just to hear some music”.
The US singer-songwriter wrapped up the UK and European leg of her 2024 ‘Childish Behaviour’ tour with a performance at The Roundhouse in Camden Town, London last night (June 10).
She is also scheduled to support Mitski at All Points East in the capital and make an appearance at Electric Picnic in Ireland this summer.
Ahead of yesterday’s London concert, Cain shared a statement on her Instagram Stories in which she reminded ticketholders of gig etiquette and how to treat one another in the audience.
“Hi all! Just wanted to reiterate before tonight’s show in London that it is extremely important to me that you all respect each other both in the queue and once in the venue,” the musician began.
“I very much hate hearing that anyone attending our shows walked away with a negative experience because of bad behaviour in the pit. Barrelling to the front, slapping people’s hands away when I reach for them, verbally insulting people, it’s all just not very nice.”
Cain continued: “I come and I play these songs because I love them and I would hope the reason you’re coming is because you love them also. There’s really no room for anything else at these gigs. Please do not give us the reputation of being a band that has a negative concert experience for fans.”
She went on to say that she wanted fans to “feel safe and excited” at her shows, “not like they’re going to have to fight for their life just to hear some music”.

“I greatly value community and love between those connecting through shared experiences and I find it really disappointing and disheartening to think that would not be the case for some people because of the callousness of others,” Cain explained.
“Again, to everyone coming tonight or to any future shows, thank you so much for your love and support and we are always very excited to play for you and look forward to seeing you. Stay safe, stay hydrated, and we will see you tonight!!”
According to Exclaim!, there have been numerous complaints from fans regarding Cain’s recent gigs – including her first date at The Roundhouse last Wednesday (June 5) – shared on the artist’s subreddit.
Some users recounted instances of people drowning out Cain’s performance by screaming during the tracks, fans being groped and laughing at a disabled attendee.
Cain, who released her debut album ‘Preacher’s Daughter’ in 2022, is also scheduled to play a run of North American dates this summer. Find any remaining tickets here.
