Gary police investigating multiple homicides

Two Gary men are dead after they were shot outside their homes in separate incidents.

In the first incident, Gary police were called June 1 to the 4100 block of W. 23rd Avenue for a man down in front of a home there, Gary Police Cmdr. Jack Hamady said in an email Tuesday. They arrived to find him near a vehicle outside the home, and Gary Fire medics started lifesaving measures on the scene, he said.

The man — Pen Standifer, 65 — was taken to Methodist Hospital’s Northlake Campus in Gary, where he died from his injuries, according to a Lake County Coroner’s office release.

Gary Police Department secured the crime scene and notified Lake County Prosecutors Homicide Task Force and the Lake County Crime Lab. Anyone with information regarding this incident can call Detective McCall with the Task Force at 219 755-3855.

In the second incident, Gary Police are looking for a man they saw fleeing from a car that may have been involved in a Monday afternoon shooting in the 4300 block of W. 20th Avenue.

Police received a call around 1:14 p.m. June 3 for a report of shots fired and a man down, Hamady said in a release Tuesday. Upon arrival, they found a man on whom Gary Fire Medics started lifesaving measures, but they advised he was dead, Hamady said.

The victim, 28-year-old David Israel David, suffered multiple gunshot wounds at his residence. The Lake County Coroner’s Office pronounced him dead at the scene at 3:07 p.m.

While first responders were dealing with David’s death, dispatch advised another man had been shot and taken to Methodist Hospital’s Northlake Campus in Gary via private vehicle, Hamady said. Officers arrived and found a 24-year-old man who’d been shot in the right ankle; he was treated and released into custody, Hamady said.

Meanwhile, Lake County Sheriff’s Police located a tan Buick of which police received reports of being around the W. 20th Avenue shooting, and they, along with Gary police, pursued it to the 1000 block of Wallace Street, where two men got out and fled on foot, Hamady said. Police found a 19-year-old man who’d gotten shot in the leg hiding in a Wallace Street garage, he said.

The Gary Fire Department was called to that scene to treat the man before getting released into custody, Hamady said. The second man, however, hasn’t been found.
