Gateway Center installs art created by artists facing homelessness

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The Gateway Center has new artwork created by artists working through their own struggles with addiction and homelessness. 48 pieces were commissioned for the space at multiple art studios in the city.

The artists were given space and supplies to tell the stories they wanted to tell. “My art, like my life, is a messy process. I reassemble broken pieces into something new,” said Artist, Darla Wirth in a news release. “Following a life-altering accident, I’m using my second chance at life to make art because blank walls are boring, but making art is therapeutic to the creator and the viewer.

The City of Albuquerque arts program funded the program.
