Sharmin Segal responds to landing Heeramandi via nepotism
Alamzeb of the much-talked-about Netflix series Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, has recently found herself amidst a flurry of criticism. As the niece of the filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Sharmin Segal’s feature in the lead role has sparked debates surrounding nepotism within the industry.
Now contrary to populous opinion, Segal revealed how she had to undergo a rigorous audition process lasting a year. During her recent appearance at The Great Indian Kapil Show, she explained that she had to undergo sixteen auditions, for her role as Alamzeb. In her words, “Ek saal ke liye prepare kiya aur 16 baar auditions diye (In one year I gave 16 auditions for the role).”
However, controversy continued when Segal and Bhansali were seen together at a special screening of Heeramandi in Los Angeles, sans other cast members. This exclusivity drew criticism from fans and observers, further fueling the nepotism debate.
Nonetheless, addressing criticism of her performance, the actor acknowledged the vastness of public opinion. “We live in a world of 1.7 billion people, in India itself. After all, how many people’s opinions are you gonna shape or have control over,” she remarked.
In the face of online backlash, Sharmin Segal reflected on the memories made during the three-year journey of Heeramandi. Taking to Instagram recently, she shared heartfelt gratitude towards her co-stars and the production team.
