ComingSoon Editor-in-Chief Tyler Treese spoke to My Spy The Eternal City star Flula Borg about the action-comedy sequel. Borg discussed his more serious approach to playing a villain and reminisced about a classic music collab with Turquiose Jeep Records. My Spy The Eternal City is now streaming on Prime Video.
“When Sophie’s (Coleman) high school choir is selected for an Italian tour culminating in a performance for the Pope in Vatican City, JJ (Bautista) sees this as an opportunity to bond with his new stepdaughter, so he volunteers to help chaperone the group through the Venetian canals, across Florence’s renowned bridges and into Rome’s most historic sites. Instead, he finds that he and Sophie have become unwitting pawns in a terrorist plot that could end the world as we know it,” says the synopsis.
Tyler Treese: You get to be the big bad villain here. It’s a very classic character type. So how was it really finding your own spin on the big evil guy here?
Flula Borg: Dude, so fun to be a very, very rude, bad boy. What an exciting time. I’ve never done this before. I’ve played like slightly funny villain guys, but to just be an absolute a-hole who says a funny thing every once in a while. So great just to tap into that. Highly exciting.
That’s what surprised me about this role is that this is a pretty funny film, but you’re playing it very straight for the most part. You do have some really funny lines, but for the most part, this is a more serious role for you. I talked to the director; he said he wasn’t even aware of your comedy background until after he had cast you. So how was it really doing such a different spin on this?
Well, that was the goal. I feel like that my instinct was there are so many funny people in this movie. I am literally the bad guy. I think I should just be actually bad, just from the energy of it. So that was my choice, and Pete seemed to be on board with that. And yeah, I don’t think he understood that my background that people know about is more comedy. So, it was very fun. What a fun surprise.
You’re obviously in great shape, and you go blow for blow with Dave Bautista in this. The fight in the car was really fun. How was it going toe to toe with this pro wrestling legend?
Insane. I mean, look, that was the most fun part for me was knowing I had to do this and it had to look believable. So look, I had to gain several pounds in several parts of my body to make this work, to make it look believable. Also, I had to practice more than I normally would because it’s fighting, and I’m fighting a professional. It’s not like my step-uncle. He doesn’t fight, by the way.
It’s been so awesome seeing your career blossom because when I first saw you, you did this collab with Turquoise Jeep Records called “Taste You Like Yogurt,” and every time I would see you pop up in something, I’d be like, “That’s the ‘Taste You Like Yogurt’ guy!”

How did Flynt Flossy not become the biggest star of our generation?
Dude, I’m still confused. He did a collab with Childish Gambino years ago. I am still confused. Those early videos to me are still some of the best things ever made. They are. So I love that they’re in the square format. They’re terrible in the best genius way possible. Like intentionally. Legends. Shout out Turquiose Jeep.
The video is just perfect. The intentionally bad editing. It’s so ahead of its time. It’s really genius.
