Nexstar acquired The CW in 2022 with the aim of making it more profitable, because of which they had to become budget-conscious. Adding to that, their fall lineup was also reportedly not as profitable as the network would have liked it to be. Hence, they cut Walker out of it.
Showrunner Anna Fricke said that she wasn’t aware that the show was getting canceled when she was writing and hence, she left several loose threads to give way for the potential next season. However, after the decision was seemingly made, Fricke was given ample time to make changes to the final episode to give the series a proper closure but she stuck to the original draft. “It seemed too rushed and too hurried, and it would have felt tacked on. So we opted to leave the finale as it was,” she explained (via Deadline).
Although the show has ended, a spinoff series can still be expected. Things are very shaky with Nextstar and the company is undergoing massive changes. But since it has been one of the network’s popular shows, once everything is back in place, viewers can get a Walker spinoff or sequel.
