John Butler just released his new album, Running River. Not ready to stop working, the singer, multi-instrumentalist and producer is working on something new.
Butler has just finished mixing a new album, revealing that it’s an instrumental LP that will act as the next chapter to his 1996 busking album, Searching For Heritage.
Taking to Instagram yesterday (6 June), Butler shared a studio pic and wrote in the caption, “Just finished mixing season 2, instrumental album. The album’s name is ‘Still Searching’ and continues forward from where my first instrumental/busking album ‘Searching for Heritage’ started.”
He then tagged musician and songwriter Dave Mann and producer James Newhouse and wrote: “Hot on the heels of my latest ambient album Running River recorded with @davemannmusic on engineering and both of the first two seasons mixed by this legend @soundmanjames. One of the best in the business. And he’s here in my home state of Western Australia, Bibbulumun Nation. Thanks again James.”

Butler’s new album, Running River, has been described as a “balm” for the busy, noisy, modern world. The Aussie legend intentionally released a “slow” record that gives people “a bit of relief from the fray and the onslaught of real life.”
In a recent cover story with The Music, Butler said of his new album: “Music has always been a very cathartic thing for me – I use art to heal and to understand and interface with the world – and this was just a new way for me to be able to do that.”

In 1996, Butler recorded and sold cassette tapes of his first instrumental album, Searching For Heritage, on the streets of Fremantle. He celebrated the album’s 20th anniversary by reissuing it on vinyl, and all copies sold out within 36 hours.
