Thursday’s Five Facts

[1] 1 injured after shooting at the Albuquerque Convention Center – APD says a man shot his step mother while attending a graduation ceremony at the Albuquerque Convention Center Wednesday. Commencement was underway for the Southwest Secondary Learning center when a shot rang out. 21-year-old Christian Bencomo is accused of being the shooter. They say the stepmom went to hug Bencomo and that’s when he shot her in the neck. She is in critical but stable condition. Detectives tried to speak with Bencomo but they say he declined to make a statement. He is being booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center.

[2] Albuquerque police cracking down on crime at city bus stops – A two-day operation targeting bus stops along the Central corridor led to a handgun, fentanyl, and 17 felony warrants cleared. APD’s Proactive Response Teams saturated all of the stops along Route 66 a few weeks ago. A lot of their attention went to the ART bus stop at Central and Louisiana. Because of the success of the operation, the department now plans on expanding these operations citywide.

[3] Less wind and higher rain chances through the weekend – There is a chance for a few sprinkles in the northeast highlands this morning, and a better chance for rain in the northern mountains this afternoon and evening. The Metro will see sunshine until this afternoon, and then clouds will increase through the evening. Temperatures will be a bit warmer than Wednesday, and the winds will stay lighter, at about 15 to 35 mph across the state.

[4] Residents raise concerns over North Domingo Baca Aquatic Center plans – Residents near North Domingo Baca Park say they have been waiting for the city’s promised indoor pool facility since 2005. The city promised a 60-meter by 25-yard indoor pool facility with indoor lap lanes, plus an outdoor pool. Some neighbors are worried the city is prioritizing building a cheaper outdoor pool first and may not have enough money to build the indoor facility. Neighbors, launched a petition Tuesday, urging city leaders to build an indoor facility first. Councilor Brook Bassan says if everything goes according to plan, she hopes construction on the indoor facility will happen before the end of this year. 

[5] University of New Mexico Hospital nurse adopts NICU baby – The family of a New Mexico NICU is a little bigger after she adopted a child born more than four weeks premature. In 2022, Olivia Peña was a registered nurse at UNM Children’s Hospital when she got a call about a newborn who was struggling at the NICU. Peña had fostered several children before, but she knew that little Addison was going to be a different challenge. After six months in the NICU, Addison came to her new home. Now a year and a half later, Addison is doing great.
