Monday’s Five Facts

[1] Parent raising concerns about ‘lock box’ cell phone policy at APS middle school – A mother of an Albuquerque middle school student is speaking out against a rule that requires students to put their cell phone in a lock box during class time. Jefferson Middle School enforces the policy prohibiting the use of cell phones during instructional times. The mother is pushing back against the policy, saying it would sever the connection with her child during an emergency situation or if the school falls under threat. APS said there are exceptions to the policy, such as when a student or a family member has a special medical circumstance, or when a student is using the device for educational or instructional purposes with the teacher’s permission and supervision.

[2] City council expected to vote on several resolutions – Albuquerque city councilors are expected to vote on new resolutions during Monday’s meeting. Several resolutions are in front of the council this week. They would change how the city addresses vacant and dilapidated buildings, possible rules about how the city can utilize AI technology, and how much food truck owners will pay for permit fees. The meeting will begin at 5 p.m. on Monday.

[3] Warm, dry weather with mostly light winds ahead – Very clear skies with relatively chilly mornings and seasonably warm afternoons will continue this week as despite a storm system approaching later this week, most will still remain rain-free with mostly light winds.

[4] Social media lawsuit – Las Cruces Public Schools is joining a lawsuit against several social media platforms. The suit argues social media giants including Meta, Google, Tik Tok and Snapchat design their apps to get teens addicted while also fostering an environment of cyber bullying, all leading to increased anxiety and depression.

[5] Balloon Fiesta Day Three – Monday, October 7 is day three of the 2024 Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. Monday’s schedule of events includes a mass accension, fly in competition launch and a chainsaw carving exhibition.
