Man shoots to death a Metro bus passenger in Commerce and is arrested, authorities say

A man was in custody after police say he fatally shot another man on board a Metro bus in Commerce in the latest deadly incident on the county’s transportation system.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to the 6200 block of Slauson Avenue, between Eastern and Garfield avenues, around 4:50 p.m. Thursday, May 16, regarding a shots-fired call, the Sheriff’s Department said.

“Both the victim and the suspect were passengers on the bus,” sheriff’s Lt. Arthur Spencer told reporters.

The suspect approached the victim on board the bus, shot him and then ran off of the bus, Spencer added.

The victim was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

The suspect was captured near Peachtree Street and Eastern Avenue, a short distance from the shooting, Spencer said. A firearm was found.

“The tragic incident … aboard a Metro bus in the Commerce area exemplifies how violence is increasing in society overall and spilling into our local communities,” Metro spokesman Patrick Chandler said. “Metro is saddened by this incident and extends our deepest sympathies to the victim’s family.”

The shooting came hours after Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, who is chairwoman of Metro’s board of directors, announced she had ordered an “immediate surge” in public-safety personnel on buses and trains to increase their visibility and deter crime in response to the series of violent crime on Metro buses and trains.

“The spike in violent crime has been absolutely unacceptable,” Bass said at a Thursday morning news conference.
