ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A man who blew through a stop sign in a stolen car and killed a ten-year-old girl took a plea deal on Wednesday. John Bearden Jr. admitted his guilt in the rash that killed Penny Pizarro and seriously injured her father.

“I understand what I did and I understand that I’m very remorseful for what I did, and I understand that I’m owning up to what I did. Doing so, I’m a man and I’m really sorry to the family and what happened. That’s what I’m here for today, is to face up to what I did,” said Bearden Jr.

David Pizzaro was driving his daughter to school in March 2023 when a state-owned vehicle ran a stop sign and plowed their car near Bell and San Pedro. David was badly hurt and Penny later died from her injuries.

It turned out that the SUV had been stolen from the fairgrounds and the driver, Bearden Jr., admitted to using meth. Judge Jennifer Wenersbach accepted Bearden Jr.’s plea. He pled guilty to homicide by vehicle and great bodily injury by vehicle DWI, knowingly leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, and auto theft.

Bearden Jr. is scheduled to be sentenced on October 29. He’s facing 3-27 years in prison.
